This lesson introduces our young learners to the concept of addition. Addition is a fundamental mathematical skill that we use every day. In our Ghanaian communities, we use it when we buy things from the market, when we share food with our friends, or when we count the number of players in a game of ampe. This lesson will use familiar objects like stones, bottle caps, and local food items to make the idea of "putting together" simple, fun, and easy to understand. By the end of this lesson, learners will see addition not just as numbers on a page, but as a useful tool for their daily lives.
Concept 1: What is Addition?
Addition is simply putting things together to find out how many we have in total. When we add, the number of things we have becomes more. We use special signs in mathematics for addition. The Plus Sign (+): This sign tells us to add. We can read it as "plus" or "and". The Equals Sign (=): This sign tells us the total or the answer. We can read it as "is equal to" or "is the same as".
So, when we see 3 + 2 = 5, it means "Three and two put together is the same as five."
Example: Imagine you have 2 ripe mangoes. Your friend gives you 1 more. You have put the mangoes together. Now you have more! This is addition.
