This week, we are learning a very exciting new skill called addition. Addition is simply about finding out 'how many in all' when we join groups of things together. We use it every day in Ghana! When we buy more than one item at the market, when we share our snacks with friends, or when we count the number of players on two teams, we are adding. Understanding addition helps us solve simple everyday problems. This lesson will teach us two ways to add: by physically "putting things together" and by a clever trick called "counting on".
Concept 1: What is Addition?
Addition is the process of combining two or more groups of items to find the total number of items. It's about finding out "how many altogether?". Keywords: We use words like add, plus, join, combine, altogether, sum, and total when we talk about addition. The Plus Sign (+): This sign tells us to add. When you see `+`, it means "and" or "put together". For example, `3 + 2` means "3 and 2 put together". The Equals Sign (=): This sign means "is the same as" or "the total is". It shows the answer to the addition problem. For example, `3 + 2 = 5` means "3 and 2 put together is the same as 5".
We will learn two main ways to add.
