This lesson introduces our young learners to the foundational concept of addition. In our daily lives in Ghana, we are constantly combining things: adding more yams to a pile at the market, putting different fruits in one bowl, or joining friends to play a game. This lesson helps children understand this idea of "putting together" using numbers and objects. By learning to combine sets, they are taking their first step into the world of addition, which is a crucial skill for counting money, cooking, and solving everyday problems. We will use familiar objects like stones, bottle caps, and seeds to make learning fun, practical, and hands-on.
This lesson is about "combining sets," which is the first step to understanding addition. We focus on the action and the language before introducing formal symbols like '+' and '='.
Key Concepts: Set: A group or a collection of similar items. For example, a group of 3 mangoes is a set. A group of 4 pencils is another set. Combining/Joining: This is the action of putting two or more sets together to form one single, larger set. It's the "doing" part of addition. Total/Altogether: This is the final number you get after you have combined the sets and counted all the items in the new, larger group.
Step-by-Step Explanation with Worked Examples:
We will use a "Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract" (CPA) approach. Today, we focus on the Concrete (using real objects) and Pictorial (drawing).
