This lesson focuses on road safety, a very important topic for our young learners in Ghana. Every day, they see cars, tro-tros, aboboyaas (tricycles), and okadas (motorcycles) on our busy roads. They may walk to school, go to the market with their parents, or play near a road. Understanding the basic rules of how to be safe around traffic is a life-saving skill. This lesson will teach them simple, memorable rules to protect themselves and make them aware of their surroundings.
This lesson is built around three core concepts: Awareness, Rules, and Action.
Concept 1: Awareness - The Road is a Busy Place Explanation: The road is mainly for vehicles to move from one place to another. We call people who are walking `pedestrians`. The road can be dangerous for pedestrians if we are not careful. Ghanaian Context: "Think about the road just outside our school. What do you see? We see private cars, taxis, big tro-tros full of people, and fast okadas. These vehicles cannot stop quickly. That is why we, the pedestrians, must be very smart and careful before we get on the road."
Concept 2: Rules - Traffic Lights and Zebra Crossings The Traffic Light: This is a special light that tells drivers when to stop and when to go. It has three colours, like a robot with three eyes. RED: (Show a large red circle). "When the traffic light is RED, it means STOP! All cars, tro-tros, and okadas must stop. They cannot move." YELLOW / AMBER: (Show a large yellow circle). "When the light is YELLOW, it tells drivers to get READY. They are getting ready to stop because red is coming, or getting ready to go because green is coming. For us, yellow means WAIT. Don't cross." GREEN: (Show a large green circle). "When the light is GREEN, it means GO! The cars are allowed to move. Is it safe for us to cross when the cars have a green light? No! We must wait for them to stop." The Zebra Crossing: This is the safest place for a pedestrian to cross the road. Explanation: "Have you seen big white and black stripes painted on the road? It looks like the stripes of a zebra! That's why it is called a zebra crossing. It is a special message to drivers that says, 'Be careful, people cross here! You must slow down and stop for them.' When you see a zebra crossing, it is the best place to cross the road." (Show a large picture of a zebra crossing).
Concept 3: Action - The Safe Crossing Drill (The Kerb Drill)
