Lesson summary

This lesson introduces our young learners to the concept of addition. Addition is not just a maths topic; it is something we do every day in our lives here in Ghana. When we go to the market and buy 2 tomatoes and 3 onions, we use addition to know how many items we have. When we share our snacks with friends, we are involved in addition. This lesson will build a strong foundation for understanding numbers by teaching learners how to combine groups of items to find a total, a skill they will use at home, in the market, and at play.

Lesson notes

Core Idea: What is Addition?

Addition is simply joining or putting things together. When we have two or more groups of items and we bring them together to make one bigger group, we are adding. We then count everything in the new big group to find out the total.

For this lesson, we will focus on the concept and language, not the symbols (+) and (=) yet. We will use words like: "__ and __ makes __." "How many altogether?" "How many in all?"

Materials Needed: Locally available counters: bottle caps, smooth stones, seeds (e.g., groundnuts, beans), pieces of chalk. Chalkboard/Whiteboard and chalk/markers. Learners' exercise books or slates.
