This lesson introduces our young learners to the foundational concept of addition by combining sets of objects. In our daily lives in Ghana, we are always putting things together. We add more yams to the pile at the market, we add more chairs for visitors in our homes, and we share snacks with friends, combining what we have. This lesson helps children understand that numbers can grow when we join groups, a vital skill for counting, shopping, and solving everyday problems. We will use familiar objects like stones, bottle caps, and seeds to make learning fun and practical.
This lesson focuses on the concept of addition as combining sets. We will avoid formal symbols like '+' and '=' for most learners, focusing instead on the action and the language.
Concept 1: What is a "Group" or a "Set"? A group is simply a collection of things. We can have a group of anything! A group of 5 pencils. A group of 3 erasers. A group of stones you picked up outside. We find the number in a group by counting.
Concept 2: What does "Combine" mean? "Combine" means to put together or to join. When we combine two groups, we are making one bigger group from the smaller ones. We use words like: "and" (3 and 2) "makes" (3 and 2 makes 5) "put together" "in all" / "altogether"
Concept 3: What is the "Total"? The "total" is the final number you get after you have combined the groups and counted everything. It tells you "how many in all".
