Lesson summary

In our communities in Ghana, roads are very busy with cars, tro-tros, taxis, and okadas. Many of us walk to school, the market, or to visit family. Knowing how to be safe near these busy roads is one of the most important lessons a child can learn. This lesson will teach our young learners the basic but life-saving rules for crossing a road, helping them become more aware and responsible for their own safety.

Lesson notes

This lesson is divided into three main parts: understanding the dangers, knowing the safe places to cross, and learning the golden rule for crossing.

Part 1: Dangers on the Road

The road can be a dangerous place if we are not careful. We need to know what to watch out for. Moving Vehicles: These are things like cars, tro-tros (mini-buses), okadas (motorcycles), and bicycles. They move very fast and can hurt people if they hit them. It is hard for them to stop quickly. Playing on the Road: The road is not a playground. A ball can roll into the road, and if you run after it without looking, a car could be coming. We must always play in safe places like a park, a field, or our compound, far away from moving cars. Not Being Seen: Sometimes drivers cannot see small children easily, especially when it is getting dark or if a child runs out from between two parked cars. That is why we must always stop at the edge of the road where drivers can see us.
