Lesson summary

This lesson introduces our young learners to the fundamental principles of road safety. In Ghana, many children walk to school, to the market, or play near roadsides. Understanding how to be safe around traffic is a critical life skill that protects them from harm. This lesson will use songs, games, and role-playing to teach them how to identify safe crossing places and follow the basic rules for crossing a road, making them more aware and responsible members of their community.

Lesson notes

This lesson focuses on three main ideas that every child must understand to stay safe near roads.

Concept 1: Where to Cross the Road Safely

Not all places are safe for crossing. We must teach children to choose the safest spot. Safe Places: Zebra Crossing: These are the black and white stripes painted on the road. They are special places for people to walk across (`pedestrians`). Drivers know they must slow down and be ready to stop for people here. With a Trusted Adult: The safest way for a KG2 child to cross any road is by holding the hand of a mother, father, aunty, or any trusted grown-up. The adult can see better and make a safe choice. Footbridge: This is a bridge that goes over a big, busy road. It is very safe because you are high above the cars. With a School Warden ("Lollipop" Person): At some school junctions, a person in a uniform holds a sign to stop cars so children can cross safely. We must always listen to them. Unsafe Places (Places to AVOID): Between Parked Cars: It is very dangerous because drivers of moving cars cannot see a small child stepping out from between two big cars. On a Curve or Bend in the Road: You cannot see the cars coming, and the drivers cannot see you. Near the Top of a Hill: Just like a curve, it's hard to see what is coming from the other side.

Concept 2: The Steps to Crossing: "Stop, Look, Listen, Think"
