This lesson introduces our young learners to the concept of addition. In our daily lives in Ghana, we are always putting things together. When we buy 3 tomatoes and then buy 2 more, we are adding. When we join our friends to play, our group gets bigger. Understanding addition helps us count things accurately, share fairly, and solve simple everyday problems. This lesson will use familiar objects like stones, bottle caps, and pencils to make learning fun and practical. We will learn that addition is simply about joining groups to find out the total amount.
Core Idea: What is Addition?
Addition is the process of combining or joining two or more groups of things to find out the total number. It makes a quantity bigger. We can think of it as "putting together."
Key Vocabulary: Add: To join something to another thing to increase the size or number. Join / Put together: The action of bringing groups together. (Use a gesture of bringing two open hands together). Altogether / Total: The final number you get after adding everything up. Plus Sign (+): This is a special symbol that tells us to add. It looks like a small cross. We say "plus" when we see it. Equals Sign (=): This symbol means "is the same as" or "makes." It shows us what the total is.
