In Ghana, we often say, "Prevention is better than cure." This wise saying is at the heart of today's lesson. We are constantly faced with diseases like malaria, cholera, typhoid, and increasingly, conditions like hypertension and diabetes. Understanding how to prevent these diseases is not just an academic exercise; it is a vital skill for keeping ourselves, our families, and our communities healthy and productive. This lesson moves beyond simply saying "don't get sick" and explores the scientific and structured approaches public health experts use to fight diseases at different stages.
This lesson focuses on the three levels of disease prevention. Think of these levels as three different walls of defence we build against illness. What is Disease Prevention?
Disease prevention, in its broadest sense, refers to all the actions, strategies, and interventions aimed at stopping the occurrence of diseases and injuries, slowing down their progress, or reducing their consequences once they have occurred. It's about taking active steps to protect our health rather than waiting to be sick before seeking care.
Level 1: Primary Prevention
This is the very first line of defence. It is the "prevention" we most commonly think of. Definition: Primary prevention consists of actions taken to prevent a disease or injury from ever occurring in the first place. It targets healthy individuals or the general population to stop them from becoming sick. Goal: To reduce or eliminate the risk factors for a disease and stop its onset. When it Occurs: Before any sign or symptom of the disease is present. Key Idea: "Stop it before it starts."
