This lesson introduces the essential network of organisations and institutions that form the backbone of Ghana's agricultural sector. We will explore the idea that farming does not happen in isolation. For a single farmer to succeed, or for a food processor to run a factory, they rely on a wide range of services from different bodies. These "support systems" provide everything from money (credit) and knowledge (research) to good roads and fair prices.
A. What is an Agricultural Support System?
An Agricultural Support System is the network of all institutions, organisations, policies, and services that work together to assist and improve the activities of key actors in the agricultural sector. These key actors are mainly farmers (who produce the raw materials), traders (who buy, transport, and sell produce), and processors (who turn raw materials into finished goods, like turning cocoa beans into chocolate).
Think of it like building a house. A farmer is like the person living in the house. But for the house to be strong and comfortable, it needs: A strong foundation (land tenure and good policies). Bricks and mortar (inputs like seeds and fertilisers). Money to build (financial services). An architect's plan (research and knowledge). A plumber and electrician (extension services and technical advice). Roads to get to the house (infrastructure and marketing support).
All these external elements that make the house functional are the support system. Without them, the farmer cannot succeed. B. Categories of Support Organisations and Their Services
