It ranges from using a simple hand-pushed planter to a large tractor. Simple Farm Tools: Hand-held tools that rely on human power. *Examples:* Cutlass, hoe, shovel, pickaxe, hand trowel, sickle. Farm Implements: Equipment that is attached to a power source (like a tractor or animal) to perform a task. It has no engine of its own. *Examples:* Plough, harrow, ridger, planter. Farm Machinery: Complex equipment that has its own engine or motor to power its operations. *Examples:* Tractor, combine harvester, power tiller, water pump.
Think of it this way: Your hand is the power source for a cutlass (tool). A tractor is a power source (machinery) for a plough (implement). A combine harvester is a machine that does its own work with its own engine. B. The Tractor: The Prime Mover
The tractor is the most important machine on a modern farm. It is like the "engine" of the farm. It doesn't do the main farm work by itself, but it provides the power for the implements that do. Main Functions of a Tractor: To Pull: It uses its drawbar (a strong hook at the back) to pull implements like trailers and ploughs. To Lift and Control: It uses its hydraulic three-point linkage system to lift, lower, and control implements like harrows and planters. To Power: It uses the Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft (a rotating shaft at the back) to power implements that need to spin, like slashers and water pumps.
