Magnets are more than just toys we use to stick papers to a fridge. They are fundamental to many technologies we use every day in Ghana. From the speakers that play our favourite highlife and Afrobeats music, to the electric motors in fans that cool us down, to the Earth's own magnetic field that protects us from harmful solar radiation and guided explorers to our shores centuries ago. In this lesson, we will explore the invisible force field that surrounds every magnet, known as the magnetic field. Understanding this concept is the first step to understanding how so much of our modern world works.

A. What is a Magnet?

A magnet is an object that produces a magnetic field. Every simple magnet has two ends, called poles: North Pole (N): The pole that seeks the Earth's geographic North. South Pole (S): The pole that seeks the Earth's geographic South.

The Basic Law of Magnetism: Like poles repel (North repels North; South repels South). Unlike poles attract (North attracts South).

You cannot have an isolated pole. If you cut a bar magnet in half, you do not get a separate North and South pole. Instead, you get two smaller magnets, each with its own North and South pole. B. The Magnetic Field
