This lesson introduces the exciting world of emerging technologies and explores how they are transforming various sectors of Ghanaian society. From the Mobile Money (MoMo) on our phones to the drones delivering medical supplies, technology is no longer just for experts; it is a part of our daily lives. Understanding these applications is crucial for you as a student in the 21st century, as it prepares you for future careers and helps you become an informed citizen who can leverage technology for personal and national development. We will discuss the practical uses, benefits, and challenges of these technologies in key areas of our economy.
What are Emerging Technologies?
Emerging Technologies are new technologies that are currently developing or are expected to have a significant impact on society and industry in the near future. They are not yet widely used but are growing in importance. Think of them as "up-and-coming" tools that are changing the way we do things.
Key Examples: Artificial Intelligence (AI): Creating smart machines that can think and learn like humans. E.g., a chatbot on a company's website that answers your questions. Internet of Things (IoT): A network of physical devices (like smart fridges, watches, or even farm sensors) that are connected to the internet to collect and share data. Drones (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles - UAVs): Aircraft without a human pilot on board, controlled remotely or by a computer. 3D Printing: Building three-dimensional objects from a digital file, layer by layer. Blockchain: A secure and transparent way of recording transactions, famous for its use in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
