Lesson summary

This lesson explores the idea that health is not simply about being "sick" or "not sick." We will learn about the Illness-Wellness Continuum, a model that shows health as a dynamic, ever-changing journey. Understanding this helps us make conscious choices to move towards better health. Furthermore, we will critically examine the real-world challenges, or barriers, that prevent many Ghanaians from getting the healthcare they need, even when they know they are unwell. This knowledge empowers us to take better care of ourselves and advocate for better health access in our communities.

Lesson notes

This section breaks down the two main parts of our lesson: the Illness-Wellness Continuum and the Barriers to Accessing Health Services. Part A: The Illness-Wellness Continuum

The Illness-Wellness Continuum is a visual model that shows health as a spectrum, or a range, with two opposite ends. On one end, you have Premature Death. On the other end, you have High-Level Wellness. In the middle, there is a Neutral Point.

Most people think of health as being at the neutral point – "I'm not sick." But this model shows us that we can move beyond just "not being sick" to a state of high energy, vitality, and well-being. It also shows how poor choices or unfortunate circumstances can move us towards illness and, in the worst case, premature death.

Let's break down the components of the continuum, moving from left (illness) to right (wellness).
