Welcome, students. Today, we are exploring a topic that is as crucial to a farmer as a cutlass or a hoe: Communication. A farmer in a remote village in the Savannah Region might have the best yam harvest, but if they cannot communicate with buyers in the city, their efforts may be wasted. An extension officer might have a brilliant new technique to fight fall armyworms, but if they cannot communicate it effectively to farmers, the knowledge is useless. In this lesson, we will learn how information moves through the agricultural sector in Ghana, why it is so important, and the challenges we face in making it better.
A. What is Communication in Agriculture?
Communication is the process of sending and receiving information, ideas, feelings, or messages between two or more people.
Agricultural Communication is the specific process of exchanging information related to farming, fishing, livestock rearing, processing, marketing, and other agricultural activities. It is a two-way street: it’s not just about "telling" farmers what to do; it’s also about listening to their needs, experiences, and challenges. B. The Communication Process Model
