Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, are aircraft without a human pilot on board. While they were once primarily associated with military operations, their use in everyday civilian life is exploding. In Ghana, we see drones transforming healthcare delivery, agriculture, and even how we film events. Understanding these applications is crucial for any student of aerospace engineering, as it opens up a world of career opportunities and innovative solutions to local problems. This lesson will explore the diverse and impactful ways UAVs are being used to improve society right here in Ghana and across the world.

Starter Activity (5 minutes) Engage: The teacher asks the class: "Who has ever seen a drone? Where did you see it, and what was it doing?" Show a short, exciting video clip of a drone in action (e.g., filming a festival, delivering a package). Facilitate a brief discussion to activate prior knowledge. Content Delivery (30 minutes)

A. What is a UAV (Drone)?

A UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is an aircraft that operates without a human pilot physically on board. It is controlled either autonomously by onboard computers or by a human operator on the ground (a remote pilot). The entire system, including the aircraft, the ground-based controller, and the communication system, is often called an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). Key Distinction: For this lesson, we focus on Civilian Uses. These are applications for the general public, government agencies (non-military), and private companies. This is different from Military Uses, which include surveillance, reconnaissance, and combat.
