Lesson summary

Welcome, future engineers! Today, we are going to become detectives. Our mission is to uncover the secrets hidden in plain sight on the appliances we use every day. Think about the lights in this room, the fan above us, the fridge in your kitchen, or the charger for your phone. Each of these devices has a secret "ID card" that tells us exactly how it works and how much electricity it uses. This ID card is called a nameplate. In Ghana, we are all aware of the cost of electricity and the challenges of "dumsor". Understanding the information on a nameplate is the first step to becoming smart energy consumers.

Lesson notes

Part 1: What is a Nameplate?

A nameplate (also called a data plate or rating plate) is a small label or tag attached to a piece of equipment. Think of it as the equipment's birth certificate or passport. It provides essential technical specifications and safety information about the device.

Why is it so important? Safety: It tells you the correct electrical conditions (e.g., voltage) to use the device safely. Using the wrong voltage can damage the appliance or even cause a fire. Energy Consumption: It tells you how much power the device uses. This is key to understanding your electricity bill. Correct Installation: For engineers and technicians, it provides the necessary information for proper installation. Identification: It includes the model and serial number, which are crucial for repairs, warranty claims, or ordering spare parts. Part 2: Decoding the Information on a Nameplate

Let's break down the common terms you will find. We will use the example of a standard table-top fan you might find in a Ghanaian home.
