Lesson summary

Welcome, students! Today, we are exploring a topic that is fundamental to our daily lives and our nation's food security: Animal Production Management Practices. Whether it's the chicken in our light soup, the egg in our waakye, the goat for a celebration, or the milk in our tea, these products come from farms where animals are carefully raised. Understanding the "how" – the management practices – is crucial. It is the difference between a successful, profitable farm that feeds families and communities, and one that fails.

Lesson notes

What are Animal Management Practices?

Definition: Animal management practices are all the planned activities, skills, and decisions a farmer makes to care for farm animals from birth (or hatching) until they are ready for sale, consumption, or breeding. It is the science and art of raising animals to be healthy, productive, and profitable.

Why are they important? Maximises Production: Good practices lead to faster growth, more eggs, more milk, and more offspring. Ensures Animal Health and Welfare: Proper care prevents diseases and ensures animals live in a comfortable, stress-free environment. Prevents Financial Loss: A sick or dead animal is a loss to the farmer. Good management protects the farmer's investment. Ensures Food Safety: Healthy animals produce safe and wholesome food (meat, milk, eggs) for human consumption.
