This lesson introduces the fundamental concepts of health and wellness. In Ghana, as young adults, you face increasing pressures from academics (preparing for WASSCE), social life, and family responsibilities. Understanding that health is more than just the absence of sickness is crucial. It is the foundation upon which you can build a successful academic and personal life. This lesson will empower you to take active control of your well-being by understanding the four key pillars that support a healthy and fulfilling life. By focusing on these pillars, you can improve your energy levels, concentration in class, and overall happiness.
A. Defining Health and Wellness
Many people think being healthy simply means you are not sick. But it is much more than that. Health: The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Physical Health: How well your body functions. (e.g., having energy, strong muscles, no pain). Mental Health: Your cognitive and emotional well-being. (e.g., being able to handle stress, think clearly, feel good about yourself). Social Health: How well you get along with others and build healthy relationships. (e.g., having good friends, communicating well with family). Wellness: This is the active process of making choices and adopting behaviours that lead to a healthy and fulfilling life. Health can be seen as the *goal*, while wellness is the *journey* or the actions you take every day to reach that goal. For example, deciding to walk to school instead of taking a tro-tro is an act of wellness.
Think of it this way: Having good health is like owning a strong car. Practicing wellness is like performing regular maintenance (checking oil, filling fuel, washing it) to keep the car running perfectly. B. The Four Pillars of Health
Imagine a house. For it to be strong, it needs solid pillars holding it up. If one pillar is weak, the whole house is at risk. Your health is like that house, and it is supported by four main pillars.
