This lesson focuses on reinforcing two fundamental skills in volleyball: the underarm serve and the digging reception. Volleyball is a popular sport in our Ghanaian communities, played in schools during inter-house competitions, at community parks, and even on our beautiful beaches like Labadi or Busua. Mastering these basic skills is the key to enjoying the game, playing safely, and being an effective team member. This lesson will combine clear explanations with practical drills to build learners' confidence and competence.

The underarm serve is the most basic and reliable way to start a point in volleyball. It prioritises accuracy over power, making it perfect for beginners and for strategic ball placement.
Key Purpose: To legally put the ball into play and begin a rally.
Step-by-Step Breakdown: The Stance (The Foundation): Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, facing the net. Place your non-dominant foot slightly forward (if you are right-handed, your left foot is forward). Bend your knees slightly to create a stable base. Your body weight should be balanced. The Ball Hold (The Presentation): Hold the volleyball in your non-hitting hand (your left hand if you're right-handed). Position the ball in front of your body, around waist or hip level, directly in line with your hitting shoulder. The Swing (The Pendulum): Your hitting arm should swing back like a pendulum on a clock. Keep your arm straight and relaxed. This backswing generates the momentum needed to send the ball over the net. The Contact and Follow-Through: As you swing your arm forward, take a small step with your front foot. Contact the ball just below its centre. The hitting surface should be the heel of your palm or a flat fist. Do not throw the ball up. Simply swing through the stationary ball. Your arm should follow through in the direction you want the ball to go, pointing towards your target on the other side of the court. This ensures accuracy.
