Lesson summary

Welcome, students! Today, we are going to explore the exciting world of machining. Have you ever wondered how a simple block of metal is transformed into a precise car engine part, a bolt and nut, or even the shaft in a fufu pounding machine? The answer lies in machining. These processes are the backbone of modern manufacturing, from the local mechanic at Suame Magazine in Kumasi to large factories producing equipment for our cocoa farms. Understanding machining helps us appreciate the skill involved in making the tools and machines we use every day and opens our eyes to career opportunities in engineering and technical fields right here in Ghana.

Lesson notes

What is Machining?

Machining is a family of manufacturing processes where a sharp cutting tool is used to remove excess material from a larger piece of raw material (the workpiece) to create a desired shape, size, and surface finish.

Think of it like a sculptor carving a statue from a block of stone. The sculptor chips away unwanted stone to reveal the final shape. In the same way, a machinist uses a machine to cut away unwanted metal to create a precise part. Because we are *removing* or *subtracting* material, machining is known as a subtractive manufacturing process.

The material removed is called chips or swarf. The Four Major Machining Processes
