Lesson summary

Topic Introduction: Good health is our greatest asset. However, sometimes our bodies are affected by diseases that can disrupt our daily lives, our studies, and even our ability to play sports. In Ghana, we hear about diseases like Malaria, Cholera, Hypertension (often called 'pressure'), and Diabetes. Are they all the same? How are they different? Understanding how diseases are classified helps us to understand their causes, how they spread, how to prevent them, and how to manage them effectively. This knowledge is crucial for making informed decisions about our own health, the health of our families, and our performance as active individuals and athletes.

Lesson notes

What is a Disease?

A disease is a condition that impairs the normal functioning of the body or a part of the body. It is often characterized by specific signs (what a doctor can see or measure, like a rash or high blood pressure) and symptoms (what a person feels, like a headache or fatigue). Why Do We Classify Diseases?

Imagine a library with all the books thrown into one big pile. It would be impossible to find what you need! Classifying diseases is like organizing the library. It helps doctors, scientists, and public health officials to: Understand the Cause (Etiology): Is it caused by a germ, genetics, or lifestyle? Predict the Spread: Will it move from person to person? Develop Prevention Strategies: Should we focus on sanitation, vaccination, or lifestyle changes? Choose the Right Treatment: Does the person need antibiotics, lifestyle management, or genetic counselling? Main Classification of Human Diseases

The most common and important way to classify diseases is based on how they are transmitted or caused. This gives us two major groups: Communicable Diseases and Non-Communicable Diseases.
