In Ghana today, our young people, especially SHS students, face a lot of pressure from academics (like the WASSCE), family expectations, and social challenges. It is easy to focus only on physical health and forget that our minds and emotions need care too. This lesson focuses on the powerful connection between being physically active and having a healthy mind. We will explore how activities like playing football, dancing, or even brisk walking can make us feel happier and less stressed. Beyond physical activity, we will also discuss other important factors like our relationships, sleep, and how we manage stress, all of which work together to help us live a balanced and healthy life.
Teaching and Learning Materials: Whiteboard/Chalkboard, Markers/Chalk, A4 sheets for group work, Posters (if available) showing people engaged in physical and social activities.
Introduction (5 mins): Start with a quick "Think-Pair-Share" activity. Ask students: "*Think about the last time you felt really happy or relaxed. What were you doing?*" Give them one minute to think, one minute to share with a partner, and then ask a few pairs to share with the class. Many will likely mention activities that are physical (playing a game, dancing) or social (talking with friends). Use this to introduce the topic.
Core Content: Factors that Promote Positive Mental and Emotional Health
First, let us understand our key terms. Mental Health: This is not just about the absence of mental illness. It is a state of well-being where you can realise your own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life (like exams or chores), work productively, and contribute to your community. It’s about how you think and process information. Emotional Health: This is about your ability to understand, manage, and express your emotions in a healthy way. It involves being aware of your feelings (like anger, sadness, joy) and knowing how to handle them without being overwhelmed.
