In Ghana, from the beautiful traditional stools made in Ahwiaa to the modern kitchen cabinets built in Accra, wood is everywhere. But what holds these wonderful wooden artefacts together? The secret often lies in a powerful but unseen material: adhesive, or what we commonly call glue. Choosing the wrong adhesive can make a beautiful chair wobbly and weak, while the right one can make it last for generations. This lesson will explore the different types of adhesives used in our local woodwork industry, helping you understand how to select and use the perfect one for any project, ensuring your work is strong, durable, and professional.
Starter Activity: Think-Pair-Share (10 minutes) Think (2 mins): Individually, think about a time you saw something wooden that was broken, like a chair with a loose leg or a picture frame coming apart. What material could be used to fix it? List any types of "glue" you know. Pair (4 mins): Turn to your elbow partner. Share your ideas. Did you think of the same types of glue? Discuss what you think these glues are made of. Share (4 mins): As a class, let's hear some of your ideas. The teacher will write them on the board. (e.g., "Top Bond", "Super Glue", "Arca Glue", "brownish glue from the carpenter"). We will learn the proper names for these and more today. A. What is an Adhesive?
An adhesive is a substance capable of holding materials together by surface attachment (bonding). In woodwork, it is used to create strong, permanent joints between pieces of wood. A well-glued joint is often stronger than the wood itself! B. Main Categories of Woodworking Adhesives
Adhesives used in woodwork are broadly classified into two main groups: Protein Adhesives (Natural Adhesives): These are made from natural, organic sources, mainly animal or plant proteins. They have been used for centuries. Synthetic Resin Adhesives (Man-made Adhesives): These are modern adhesives created through chemical processes. They are the most common type used in Ghana's woodwork industry today.
Let's break down each category.
