Welcome, students. Today, we are moving beyond just knowing how to plant maize or raise chickens. We are going to learn what it takes to turn those activities into a successful and profitable business. In Ghana, agriculture is the backbone of our economy, but many farms fail not because of poor soil or bad weather, but because of poor management. An agribusiness manager is like the captain of a ship; their skills and characteristics determine whether the business sinks or sails to success.
A. Who is an Agribusiness Manager?
An Agribusiness Manager is a person responsible for planning, organising, directing, and controlling the resources (land, labour, capital, equipment) of an agricultural business to achieve its goals, which usually involve making a profit and ensuring sustainability.
Think of the person in charge of a large poultry farm in Dormaa Ahenkro, the leader of a cocoa farmers' cooperative in the Western Region, or the owner of a small-scale pineapple juice processing unit in Nsawam. These are all agribusiness managers. They don't just work *in* the business; they work *on* the business. B. Key Managerial Characteristics and Skills
For an agribusiness to thrive, its manager must possess a blend of characteristics and skills. We can group these into three main categories, as developed by theorist Robert Katz. Technical Skills (The "How-To" Skills)
