In today's Ghana, more and more businesses, from the woman selling fresh shito in Makola Market to large companies like Kasapreko, are using the internet to sell their products. This is called e-commerce. Having a well-designed website is like having a beautiful, well-organised storefront that is open 24/7 to customers all over the world. This lesson will introduce the fundamental principles of designing an e-commerce web page. We will learn about the essential components that make an online shop effective and how to plan the layout of a webpage for a local Ghanaian business, even before writing a single line of code.
A. What is E-commerce?
E-commerce (electronic commerce) is the buying and selling of goods or services using the internet, and the transfer of money and data to execute these transactions.
Think about Jumia, Glovo, or even buying airtime through the MTN mobile app. These are all forms of e-commerce. In Ghana, this is booming because it allows a small business in Kumasi to sell to a customer in Accra or even London without needing a physical shop there.
Types of E-commerce in Ghana: Business-to-Consumer (B2C): A company sells directly to an individual. *Example: Melcom selling a TV to you online.* Business-to-Business (B2B): A business sells to another business. *Example: A company that produces packaging selling boxes to FanMilk.* Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C): An individual sells to another individual, usually through a third-party platform. *Example: Selling your old phone on Tonaton.com.*
