Lesson summary

Welcome, future engineers! Today, we are discussing a topic that is just as important as your technical skills in welding, drawing, or electronics. We are exploring Ethics and Professional Practice. In Ghana, we see amazing engineering feats like the Akosombo Dam and the Pokuase Interchange. We have also sadly witnessed tragedies like collapsed buildings. The difference often comes down to ethics and professionalism. This lesson will help you understand why acting professionally is crucial for your career, for the safety of the public, and for building a better Ghana. It is the foundation upon which a successful and respected engineering career is built.

Lesson notes

Part A: Understanding Key Terms Ethics: These are the moral principles that guide a person's behaviour. Think of it as your internal compass telling you what is right and wrong. For an engineer, this means considering the safety, health, and welfare of the public above all else. Professionalism: This is the *conduct, aims, or qualities* that characterize a profession or a professional person. It is how you apply your ethics in the workplace. It's about being competent, reliable, and respectful. Professional Behaviour: This is the combination of ethics and professionalism in action. It includes your communication, time management, appearance, accountability, and technical competence.

Analogy: Imagine you are building a wall. Ethics are the strong, hidden foundation that ensures the wall will stand firm. Professionalism is the skillful laying of the blocks, the straight lines, and the smooth finish that everyone sees. You need both for a good, lasting wall.

Part B: The Benefits of Professional Behaviour

Acting professionally is not just about "being nice"; it has real, tangible benefits. Let's explore them.
