As Senior High School students in Ghana, you face many pressures every day. From the demand to excel in the WASSCE and the expectations of your families, to navigating friendships in the dormitory and even managing your "chop box" money, these pressures can be challenging. This feeling is called stress. While some stress can push us to do our best, too much of it can negatively affect our health, our studies, and our happiness. This lesson will help us understand what stress is, where it comes from, and the different forms it can take. By understanding stress, we can take the first step towards managing it effectively for a healthier and more successful life.
A. What is Stress?
Think of the string on a guitar or a "kologo". If the string is too loose, it cannot make a sound. This is like having no challenges or motivation in life, leading to boredom. If the string is too tight, it will snap. This is like having too much pressure, leading to burnout, anxiety, and health problems. When the string has just the right amount of tension, it produces beautiful music. This is the ideal level of stress that helps us perform at our best.
Definition: Stress is the body's natural physical, mental, and emotional response to any demand, challenge, or threat. The thing that causes stress is called a stressor.
When you face a stressor (e.g., a teacher asks you a question you don't know the answer to, or you nearly get hit by an "okada"), your body activates a "fight-or-flight" response. Hormones like adrenaline are released, your heart beats faster, your breathing quickens, and your muscles tense up.
