In Ghana, the roof is one of the most important parts of any building. It is our primary shield against the intense tropical sun, the heavy seasonal rains, and the dusty Harmattan winds. As a key component of the superstructure (the part of the building above the ground), the roof not only provides protection but also gives a building its shape, character, and stability. In this lesson, we will explore the definition, functions, common types, and materials of roofs, focusing on examples we see every day in our own communities. Understanding roofs is essential for anyone interested in building, architecture, or even just being a knowledgeable homeowner.
Starter Activity (5 minutes): *Teacher asks the whole class:* "Imagine you are building a house. You have finished the foundation and the walls. What is the very next major part you must add, and why is it so important, especially during the rainy season?" (This leads to the topic: the roof).
(A) What is a Roof?
A roof is the top covering of a building, including all materials and constructions necessary to support it on the walls of the building or on its uprights. It provides protection against rain, sunlight, wind, and extreme temperatures.
It is a critical part of the superstructure. Let's remember: Substructure: The part of the building *below* ground level (e.g., foundations). Superstructure: The part of the building *above* ground level (e.g., walls, floors, beams, columns, and the roof).
