Lesson summary

In the field of biomedical science, discovering a cure or understanding a disease is only half the battle. The other half is communicating that information clearly and persuasively to colleagues, policymakers, and the public. An effective presentation can influence health policy, secure funding for research, and educate communities to prevent disease outbreaks. In Ghana, where public health education is vital for managing conditions like malaria, hypertension, and cholera, the ability to present scientific information effectively is a critical skill for any future healthcare professional.

Lesson notes

This lesson breaks down the process of creating an effective scientific presentation into three main parts: Content & Structure, Slide Design, and Delivery. Part 1: Content and Structure - What to Say

An effective presentation tells a story. For a healthcare issue, the story follows a clear, logical path from the problem to the solution.

A. Choosing a Relevant Topic Your first step is to select a healthcare problem. A good topic is: Relevant to Ghana: It affects a significant number of people in our communities. Researchable: There is enough credible information available online or in books. Specific: "Cancer" is too broad. "The Link Between Hepatitis B and Liver Cancer in Ghana" is more specific and manageable.

Ghanaian Context Examples: Malaria Prevention and Control in Coastal Regions The Rise of Type 2 Diabetes among Urban Ghanaians Managing Sickle Cell Anaemia: Challenges and Solutions Combating Cholera Outbreaks in Peri-urban Areas The Impact of Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) on Adult Health
