This is not just a school topic; it is a powerful way of thinking that helps us solve real problems, from figuring out why our kenkey is spoiling quickly to understanding how to purify water in our communities. Today, we will master this method and see how it is the foundation for everything we study about matter and its properties.
What is the Scientific Method?
The scientific method is a systematic, step-by-step procedure that scientists use to explore observations and answer questions. It is a logical process of discovery that allows us to understand the world around us, including the nature of matter.
The steps are generally as follows:
Step 1: Observation This is the starting point. It involves noticing something in the world around you using your five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch). Example in Ghana: You observe that iron roofing sheets in coastal towns like Cape Coast seem to rust much faster than those in inland towns like Kumasi. Or, you notice that your wet school uniform dries faster on a windy day than on a calm day.
