Lesson summary

This lesson introduces the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and explores their critical role as a framework for societal development, with a special focus on the role of engineers in achieving these goals in Ghana. As future engineers, it is not enough to simply build structures or design systems; you must understand *why* you are building them. The SDGs provide the "why"—a global blueprint for creating a more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable world. From solving 'dumsor' to providing clean water in our villages and building resilient roads, engineering is at the very heart of turning these global goals into local realities.

Lesson notes

Part 1: What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected goals adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. They are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by the year 2030.

Think of them as a "to-do list" for the entire world. They cover a wide range of social, economic, and environmental issues.

The 17 SDGs are: No Poverty Zero Hunger Good Health and Well-being Quality Education Gender Equality Clean Water and Sanitation Affordable and Clean Energy Decent Work and Economic Growth Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure Reduced Inequalities Sustainable Cities and Communities Responsible Consumption and Production Climate Action Life Below Water Life on Land Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions Partnerships for the Goals
