This lesson introduces the critical role of Biosafety Professionals in the world of biomedical science. In Ghana, institutions like the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) are at the forefront of diagnosing and researching dangerous infectious diseases like COVID-19, Lassa fever, and Tuberculosis. How do scientists work with these deadly pathogens without getting infected or releasing them into the community? The answer lies in the work of Biosafety Professionals. They are the guardians of the laboratory, ensuring that science is conducted safely and responsibly.
2.1. Who is a Biosafety Professional?
A Biosafety Professional, often called a Biosafety Officer (BSO), is a specially trained individual responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety policies and procedures in a laboratory where potentially hazardous biological materials are handled.
Think of them as the "Safety Manager" of the science lab. While the researcher focuses on the experiment, the Biosafety Professional focuses on ensuring the experiment is done without causing harm to anyone. Their goal is to prevent laboratory-acquired infections (LAIs) and the accidental release of harmful microorganisms into the environment. 2.2. Key Roles and Responsibilities of a Biosafety Professional
The work of a Biosafety Professional is multifaceted. Here are their core roles, with examples relevant to the Ghanaian context.
