In today's Ghana, our lives are deeply connected to digital technology. We use our phones for Mobile Money (MoMo), our laptops to apply for university or jobs, and social media like WhatsApp and Instagram to connect with friends and family. While these tools are powerful, they also expose our personal and financial information to risks. Understanding how to protect this information is no longer just for experts; it is a critical life skill for every student. This lesson will introduce you to the common dangers (threats) that exist in the digital world and equip you with the practical knowledge to protect yourself, your family, and your future.
This section breaks down the core ideas you need to understand. A. What is Computer and Information Security?
Think of your family house. You have doors, windows, locks, and maybe a fence or burglar-proofing to keep unwanted people out and to protect your belongings.
Computer Security (also called Cybersecurity) is the same idea, but for your digital world. It is the practice of protecting your computers, servers, mobile devices, networks, and data from malicious attacks, damage, or unauthorized access.
The goal is to protect three key things, often called the CIA Triad: Confidentiality: Keeping your information secret and private. (Only you should know your MoMo PIN). Integrity: Ensuring your information is accurate and has not been changed without permission. (Your bank balance should be correct). Availability: Making sure you can access your information and systems when you need them. (Your school's results portal should be working during the registration period). B.
