Lesson summary

When we think of the woodwork industry in Ghana, our minds often jump to large trees like Odum, Wawa, or Mahogany being cut for timber to make furniture, doors, and roofing. While timber is very important, our forests provide many other valuable materials that are crucial for our economy, culture, and daily lives. These are called Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs). This lesson explores these "hidden treasures" of the forest. We will learn what they are, where they come from, and how they are used to create beautiful and useful artefacts.

Lesson notes

This section breaks down the core ideas you need to understand. We will move from the general concept of forest products to the specifics of NTFPs. What are Forest Products?

A forest product is any material derived from a forest for human use. They are broadly divided into two main categories: Timber Products: These are products derived from the wood (trunk, stem, and branches) of trees. This is the primary material for lumber, planks, furniture, construction, and plywood. Ghanaian Examples: Odum, Mahogany, Wawa, Teak, Emire. Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs): These are all other biological products, besides timber, that are harvested from forests. They can be parts of plants (leaves, fruits, nuts, bark, roots, sap) or even animals and fungi. Detailed Explanation of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs)

Definition: Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) are goods of biological origin other than timber, harvested from forests for subsistence (personal use) or for commercial sale.

In simple terms, if it comes from the forest but it's not the main wood of the tree trunk, it is likely an NTFP. Common NTFPs in Ghana: Sources and Uses
