Lesson summary

In Ghana, the woodwork industry is a vital part of our economy and daily lives. From the beautiful furniture in our homes to the roofing trusses that shelter us, wood is everywhere. We see carpenters and joiners in every community, from Anloga in Kumasi to Kokompe in Accra. However, these activities, from cutting the tree in the forest to the final coat of varnish, have significant effects on our environment—the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land we live on. This lesson will help us understand these impacts and explore how we, as future technicians and responsible citizens, can make the industry more sustainable and safer for our planet.

Lesson notes

This topic examines the relationship between making things from wood and the health of our natural environment. A. What is 'Environmental Impact' in Woodwork?

Environmental impact refers to any change to the environment, whether negative or positive, that is wholly or partially caused by an organisation's activities, products, or services.

In the context of the Ghanaian woodwork industry, this means we look at the entire journey of a piece of wood: From the Forest (Sourcing): How cutting down trees affects the forest ecosystem. To the Workshop (Processing): The waste and pollution created while turning logs into furniture. To the Home (Use & Disposal): What happens to the wooden product at the end of its life. B. Negative Environmental Impacts of the Woodwork Industry

Let's break down the negative impacts into stages.
