This week, we're going to learn about Healthy Living. Being healthy isn't just about not being sick. It's about taking care of our bodies and minds so we can play, learn, and grow strong. In South Africa, it's important to learn about healthy living because it helps us stay in school, participate in our communities, and have the energy to enjoy our beautiful country. Many children in South Africa face challenges like limited access to healthy food or clean water, so understanding how to stay healthy even with these challenges is vital. We'll learn about keeping clean, eating good foods, exercising, and getting enough rest. These things help us be the best versions of ourselves!
Personal Hygiene: Personal hygiene means keeping our bodies clean. This helps us avoid getting sick and also helps us feel good about ourselves.
Think of it like this: germs are tiny little creatures that can make us feel bad. Cleaning ourselves gets rid of these germs.
Washing Hands: We should wash our hands with soap and water before we eat, after we use the toilet, and after we play outside. Pretend you are making bubbles with the soap all over your hands, between your fingers, and under your fingernails. Then rinse and dry them with a clean towel. Imagine you just touched a dirty door handle at the shops, and you're now going to eat a sandwich. Would you wash your hands first? YES!
Brushing Teeth: We should brush our teeth at least twice a day – once in the morning and once before we go to bed. Brushing helps get rid of food and germs that can cause cavities (holes in our teeth). Imagine sugar bugs are trying to eat your teeth! Brushing chases them away. Use toothpaste with fluoride to help protect your teeth. Show your Mom or Dad your toothbrush to make sure you have the right amount of toothpaste.
Bathing/Showering: We should bathe or shower regularly to keep our bodies clean. This washes away sweat, dirt, and germs. Think about playing soccer outside on a hot day. You'll be sweaty and probably covered in dirt! A bath or shower will make you feel fresh and clean again. Make sure to wash all parts of your body, especially your face, neck, underarms, and feet.
Wearing Clean Clothes: Clean clothes help prevent the spread of germs and make us feel good about ourselves. Dirty clothes can carry germs and smell bad! Imagine you wore your favourite shirt to paint with yesterday and got paint all over it. Would you wear it to school today? NO, you'd wear a clean shirt.
Healthy Eating: Eating healthy foods gives us the energy and nutrients we need to grow strong and healthy. Nutrients are like building blocks for our bodies.
Variety of Foods: We should eat a variety of foods from different food groups. In South Africa, this could mean eating pap (maize porridge), vegetables like spinach or cabbage, beans, and meat or chicken. A plate should have different colours – like a rainbow! Think of the colors of the South African flag - red (meat), black (beans), green (spinach or morogo). Try to get those onto your plate!
Fruits and Vegetables: Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins and minerals that help our bodies fight off sickness. Think of apples, bananas, oranges, carrots, and tomatoes. Make sure to wash your fruits and vegetables before eating them to remove any dirt or germs. Imagine you are eating an apple you picked straight from the ground. Should you wash it first? YES!
Limiting Sugary Drinks and Snacks: Sugary drinks and snacks can make us feel good for a short time, but they don't give us the nutrients we need. They can also cause cavities and make us feel tired. Think of fizzy drinks and sweets. It's okay to have them sometimes, but not too often.
Physical Activity: Moving our bodies is important for our health. It helps us build strong muscles and bones, and it also makes us feel good.
Playing Outdoors: Running, jumping, skipping, and playing games outside are all great ways to get exercise. In South Africa, playing soccer or netball with friends is a popular and fun way to stay active.
Simple Exercises: Even simple exercises like stretching and jumping jacks can make a difference. Try doing 10 jumping jacks every morning before school.
Importance of Exercise: Exercise helps us stay healthy and strong. It also helps us concentrate better in school and sleep better at night.
Rest and Sleep: Getting enough sleep is just as important as eating healthy and exercising. When we sleep, our bodies and minds can rest and recharge.
Importance of Sleep: Sleep helps us grow, learn, and feel our best. When we don't get enough sleep, we can feel tired, grumpy, and have trouble concentrating in school.
Bedtime Routine: Having a bedtime routine can help us fall asleep easier. This could include taking a bath, reading a book, or listening to calming music. Make sure your bedroom is dark and quiet. Think about how you feel when you stay up too late watching T
V. Do you feel good the next day? Probably not! Guided Practice (With Solutions)
Question 1: Thando doesn't like washing her hands after playing in the sand. Why should Thando wash her hands?
Solution: Thando should wash her hands to get rid of germs that she picked up while playing in the sand. These germs can make her sick if she touches her mouth or nose after playing. Germs live in the dirt and sand.
Question 2: Sipho only wants to eat chips and sweets for lunch. Is this a healthy lunch choice? Why or why not?
Solution: No, this is not a healthy lunch choice. Chips and sweets don't have many nutrients that Sipho needs to grow strong and healthy. They are mostly sugar and salt. He needs to eat fruits, vegetables, and protein too.
