Imagine you're at the tuck shop buying sweets, or sharing snacks with your friends, or even helping your family count change when you go to the market. Knowing how to add and subtract helps us understand how much we have, how much we need, and how much is left. It helps us share fairly and solve problems in our everyday lives, from playing games to helping out at home. Being able to work with numbers up to 10 confidently sets us up for success in all future maths lessons.

Addition: Addition is putting things together. It's like when you have 2 apples and your friend gives you 3 more. To find out how many you have in total, you add them! We use the "+" sign to show addition. So, 2 + 3 =

5. Subtraction: Subtraction is taking things away. It’s like when you have 5 sweets and you eat 2 of them. To find out how many you have left, you subtract! We use the "–" sign to show subtraction. So, 5 – 2 =

3. Number Sentences: A number sentence is a mathematical statement that shows a relationship between numbers. It includes numbers, operation signs (+ or -), and an equals sign (=).

For example: 3 + 4 = 7 is a number sentence.

Using Fingers and Counters: We can use our fingers or counters (like small stones, bottle tops, or beads) to help us add and subtract. For example, if we want to add 4 + 3, we can hold up 4 fingers on one hand and 3 fingers on the other hand, then count all the fingers together.

Worked example

Example 1 (Addition): Thando has 3 oranges. Ayanda gives him 4 more oranges. How many oranges does Thando have in total?

Explanation: We need to add the number of oranges Thando started with and the number Ayanda gave him.

Calculation: 3 + 4 = ?

We can use our fingers. Hold up 3 fingers on one hand and 4 fingers on the other. Count all the fingers. There are 7 fingers.

Answer: Thando has 7 oranges.

Example 2 (Subtraction): Zanele has 8 beads. She gives 2 beads to her friend Nomusa. How many beads does Zanele have left?

Explanation: We need to subtract the number of beads Zanele gave away from the number she started with.

Calculation: 8 – 2 = ?

We can use counters. Place 8 counters on the table. Take away 2 counters. Count how many are left. There are 6 counters.

Answer: Zanele has 6 beads.

Example 3 (Addition with a Number Line): Use a number line to solve 2 + 5 = ?

Explanation: We start at the number 2 on the number line. Then we move 5 places to the right (because we are adding).

We need to subtract the number of pencils Aisha gave away from the number she started with.

Using fingers: Hold up 7 fingers. Then put down 1 finger. Count how many fingers are still up. There are 6 fingers.
