Lesson summary

This week, we'll continue exploring the exciting world of creative arts! We'll focus on drawing, painting, and simple crafts, building on what we learned last week. Learning about art helps us express ourselves, our feelings, and our ideas in unique and colourful ways. It also helps us develop important skills like problem-solving, fine motor skills (using our hands and fingers), and imagination. In South Africa, art is everywhere – from the vibrant paintings on our taxis to the beautiful beadwork made by our grandmothers. Understanding and appreciating art helps us connect with our culture and the world around us.

Lesson notes

Drawing: Drawing is using a tool like a pencil, crayon, or marker to make marks on paper. We can draw anything we see or imagine! Drawing helps us practice using our hands and eyes together.

Shapes: Shapes are the building blocks of drawings. We use shapes like circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles to create pictures.

Lines: Lines are also very important in drawing. Lines can be straight, curved, thick, or thin. We use lines to outline shapes and add details to our drawings.

Colour: We use colour to make our drawings more interesting and realistic.

Painting: Painting is using colours mixed with water or another liquid to create pictures on paper, canvas, or other surfaces.

Primary Colours: Red, yellow, and blue are called primary colours. They are special because we can't make them by mixing other colours.

Secondary Colours: We can mix primary colours to make secondary colours. Red + Yellow = Orange Yellow + Blue = Green Red + Blue = Purple Paintbrushes: We use paintbrushes to apply paint to a surface. Paintbrushes come in different sizes and shapes.

Simple Crafts: Simple crafts involve using different materials to create something new.

Collage: A collage is a picture made by sticking different materials together on a surface. We can use paper, fabric, leaves, and other things to make a collage. Think of it as creating a puzzle with textures!

Texture: Texture is how something feels. Some things are smooth, some are rough, and some are bumpy.
