Overview: This week, we dive into two very important real-world concepts from the Measurement content area: Time and Money. For Grade 1 learners in South Africa, these are not abstract ideas but part of their daily lives. Understanding the days of the week helps them create routine and structure, from knowing which days they go to school to looking forward to the weekend to visit Gogo or play with friends. We will explore the sequence of the seven days and the concepts of 'yesterday,' 'today,' and 'tomorrow.' Simultaneously, we will introduce South African coins. Learners see money being used every day, whether at the spaza shop, the taxi rank, or the supermarket.
Part 1: Time - Days of the Week What are the Days of the Week? A week is made up of 7 days. Each day has a special name. They always follow each other in the same order. After the last day, the first day starts again, and a new week begins!
The seven days are: Monday (uMsombuluko) Tuesday (uLwesibili) Wednesday (uLwesithathu) Thursday (uLwesine) Friday (uLwesihlanu) Saturday (uMgqibelo) Sunday (iSonto)
We go to school on the weekdays: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
The weekend is when we rest and play: Saturday and Sunday. Understanding Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow These words help us talk about time.
Today: is the day we are in right now.
Yesterday: was the day that came before today.
Tomorrow: is the day that will come after today.
