This week, we dive into the exciting world of Space and Shape! Shapes are all around us, from the food we eat to the houses we live in. Understanding shapes helps us make sense of our world. In South Africa, we see shapes everywhere: the rectangular shape of our beautiful flag, the circular shape of a traditional rondavel roof, the roundness of a soccer ball that brings us so much joy, and the blocky shape of the minibus taxis we use. By learning about shapes, learners develop important skills in observation, comparison, and spatial reasoning, which are foundational for future learning in mathematics, science, and art.
This section explains the core ideas about 2D shapes and 3D objects for our Grade 1 learners. What are 2D Shapes? (Flat Shapes) A 2D shape is a flat shape. You can draw it on a piece of paper, but you can't pick it up and hold it in your hand. Think of it like a drawing or a shadow. We will learn about four special flat shapes.
Circle What it is: A circle is a perfectly round shape. It has no straight sides and no corners. It just goes round and round.
Why it's important: Circles are smooth and can roll easily if they are objects.
