Lesson summary

This lesson introduces Grade 1 learners to two fundamental concepts of measurement that are used every day: time and money. We will focus on the days of the week to help learners understand sequences and the passing of time in a structured way. This is crucial in their daily lives for understanding routines like school days, weekends, and special events. In the South African context, knowing the days of the week helps children understand when certain community activities happen, like market day or a church service. Simultaneously, we will explore South African coins. Understanding money is a vital life skill. For a young learner, it represents the first step towards financial literacy.

Lesson notes

Part A: Time - Days of the Week What is a week? A week is a group of seven days that always follow each other in the same order. When one week ends, a new week begins with the very same first day. It's like a repeating pattern or a train with seven carriages that goes around and around a track.

The seven days of the week are: Monday (The first day of the school week) Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday (The last day of the school week - Yay!) Saturday (The weekend begins!) Sunday (The last day of the week) Understanding Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow These words help us talk about time.

Today: is the day we are in right now.

Yesterday: was the day that came just before today.

Tomorrow: will be the day that comes just after today.
