This week, we explore two very important ideas that we use every single day: time and money. For a Grade 1 learner in South Africa, understanding time helps to make sense of the school week, know when the weekend is coming, and remember special days like birthdays or holidays. Understanding our South African money is essential for trips to the spaza shop, saving pocket money for a treat, or helping family with shopping. This lesson connects mathematics to the real world, showing learners that numbers are not just on a page but in their pockets and on their calendars.
Part 1: Time - Days of the Week What are the days of the week? Time helps us organise our lives. One of the first ways we learn to organise time is by using the days of the week. There are 7 days in every week. They always follow the same order, and after the last day, the first day starts all over again. It's a repeating pattern!
The seven days of the week are: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday We can think of the week in two parts: School Days / Weekdays: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. These are the days we usually come to school.
Weekend: Saturday and Sunday. These are the days for rest, play, and family time.
Important Time Words: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow These words help us talk about the days.
Today: This is the day that is happening right now.
Yesterday: This was the day that came before today.
Tomorrow: This is the day that will come after today.
