This lesson focuses on revising and consolidating what Grade 1 learners covered in their first week of Life Skills. In Week 1, we typically introduce foundational concepts related to self-awareness, healthy habits, and basic safety. Understanding these concepts is crucial for learners as they navigate their daily lives, build positive relationships, and make informed decisions about their well-being. We will revisit these topics to ensure learners have a strong foundation for the rest of the year. Just like building a house, we need a strong foundation to build on. If the foundation is weak, the house might fall!
2. 1. Body Parts Our body is made up of many different parts that work together to help us move, play, and learn. It's important to know the names of these parts so we can communicate effectively and understand how to take care of ourselves.
Head: The top part of your body that contains your brain. It helps you think!
Eyes: Used for seeing the world around you.
Ears: Used for hearing sounds.
Nose: Used for smelling and breathing.
Mouth: Used for eating, speaking, and smiling!
Hands: Used for holding, touching, and writing.
Legs: Used for walking, running, and jumping.
Feet: Used for standing and walking.
Example: Point to your nose and say, "This is my nose. I use my nose to smell the delicious food my mom is cooking!" Then point to your legs and say, "These are my legs. I use my legs to run and play with my friends!" 2.
2. Hygiene Practices Hygiene means keeping ourselves clean and healthy. This helps to prevent us from getting sick and spreading germs to others.
Washing Hands: Washing our hands with soap and water is one of the most important things we can do to stay healthy.
We should wash our hands: Before eating After using the toilet After playing outside After touching animals When our hands are dirty Brushing Teeth: Brushing our teeth twice a day helps to keep our teeth strong and healthy.
Bathing/Showering: Bathing or showering regularly helps to remove dirt and sweat from our bodies.
Example: Imagine you just finished playing in the sandpit at school. Your hands are covered in sand! You should wash your hands with soap and water before you eat your lunch, otherwise you might eat the sand and get sick. 2.
3. Emotions Emotions are feelings we have inside. It's important to understand our emotions so we can express them in a healthy way.
Happy: Feeling good and joyful.
Sad: Feeling down or upset.
Angry: Feeling mad or frustrated.
Scared: Feeling afraid.
Example: You might feel happy when you receive a present on your birthday. You might feel sad if you fall and hurt yourself. It's okay to feel these emotions! 2.
4. Safety Rules at Home Our homes should be safe places. It's important to follow safety rules to prevent accidents.
Not touching electrical outlets: Electrical outlets can give you a shock.
Not playing with matches or lighters: Fire can be dangerous. Asking an adult for help with sharp objects: Knives and scissors can cut you.
Not running inside the house: You might trip and fall.
Example: Imagine you see a bright red electrical outlet on the wall. You should never stick your finger or anything else into it because it can give you a very dangerous shock. Always ask a grown-up for help if you need to use an electrical appliance. Guided Practice (With Solutions)
Question 1: Draw a picture of yourself and label three parts of your body.
Solution: The learner should draw a picture of themselves and label three body parts, such as head, hands, and legs.
Commentary: This reinforces LO1 by visually representing and naming body parts.
Question 2: Thandi played outside and her hands are dirty. What should she do before eating her snack?
Solution: Thandi should wash her hands with soap and water.
Commentary: This reinforces LO2 by applying the concept of hygiene in a real-life scenario.
Question 3: Sipho's friend took his toy. How do you think Sipho is feeling?
Solution: Sipho is probably feeling sad or angry.
Commentary: This reinforces LO3 by identifying emotions related to a specific situation. It encourages learners to understand that more than one emotion might be possible.
Question 4: You see a box of matches on the table. What should you do?
Solution: I should not touch the matches and tell a grown-up.
Commentary: This reinforces LO4 by applying a safety rule to a specific situation. Independent Practice (Questions Only) Name five parts of your body. Why is it important to wash your hands? Give an example of when you might feel happy. Give an example of when you might feel scared. What should you do if you see a bottle of medicine? Why should you be careful around hot stoves? Draw a picture of yourself brushing your teeth. What is one thing you should never do with electricity? If someone is being mean to you, how might you feel, and what could you do? Draw a picture showing one way to keep your body healthy.
