This week, we will be revising and consolidating what we learned in Week 4 of our Life Skills lessons. In Week 4, we focused on Healthy Habits. Understanding healthy habits is crucial for Grade 1 learners in South Africa because it lays the foundation for a lifetime of well-being. Learning about hygiene, healthy eating, and physical activity helps us stay strong, energetic, and able to learn and play happily. Healthy habits also prevent us from getting sick, which means we can go to school, see our friends, and participate in our community. Thinking about and practicing healthy habits will help us grow up to be strong and healthy adults who can contribute to a healthy South Africa!
Let's refresh our memories about the healthy habits we learned in Week
4. What are Healthy Habits? Healthy habits are things we do regularly to keep our bodies and minds strong and healthy. These habits help us grow properly, have lots of energy, and avoid getting sick.
Hygiene: Hygiene means keeping ourselves clean. This is very important because germs (tiny little things that can make us sick) can live on our skin and other surfaces. Good hygiene helps us get rid of these germs.
Washing Hands: Washing our hands with soap and water is one of the BEST ways to get rid of germs.
We should wash our hands: Before eating After using the toilet After playing outside After touching animals When our hands look dirty After blowing our nose Why Soap? Soap helps lift the germs off our skin so the water can wash them away. Just using water is not enough!
How to wash your hands properly: Wet your hands, use soap, rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds (long enough to sing "Happy Birthday" twice!), rinse well, and dry with a clean towel.
Brushing Teeth: Brushing our teeth twice a day (morning and night) helps prevent cavities (holes in our teeth) and keeps our gums healthy. Why Brush? Brushing removes food and plaque (a sticky film that forms on teeth) that can cause cavities.
How to brush: Use a soft toothbrush and toothpaste. Brush gently in small circles, making sure to clean all surfaces of your teeth.
Bathing/Showering: Bathing or showering regularly helps remove dirt and sweat from our bodies, preventing bad smells and keeping our skin healthy. How often? At least a few times a week, or more often if we are very active or sweaty.
Example: Lerato plays soccer after school every day. She gets very sweaty. She should take a shower or bath after soccer to clean her body and prevent germs from growing.
Healthy Eating: Eating healthy foods gives our bodies the nutrients (vitamins and minerals) we need to grow and be strong.
Fruits and Vegetables: These are packed with vitamins and minerals.
Examples include: Apples Bananas Oranges Carrots Spinach Tomatoes Protein: Protein helps build and repair our muscles.
Examples include: Chicken Fish Beans Eggs Lentils Whole Grains: Whole grains provide energy.
Examples include: Brown rice Whole wheat bread Oats Limiting Sugary Drinks and Snacks: Too much sugar can be bad for our teeth and our bodies. We should limit sugary drinks like soda and juice and sugary snacks like candy and chips.
Example: Sipho eats an apple and a banana for his morning snack. This is a healthy habit because fruits provide vitamins and energy. He also has pap and vleis for dinner. The vleis give him protein.
Physical Activity: Physical activity means moving our bodies. It helps us stay strong, keeps our hearts healthy, and makes us feel good!
Playing outside: Running, jumping, climbing, and playing games are all great ways to be active.
Sports: Playing soccer, netball, or other sports is a fun way to exercise.
Dancing: Dancing is a fun way to move our bodies and express ourselves.
Walking/Running: Walking or running around our neighborhood is a good way to get some fresh air and exercise.
Example: Zola loves to dance to her favorite music. Dancing is a fun way for her to be physically active and stay healthy. Playing kgati with friends during break is also great exercise. Guided Practice (With Solutions)
Question 1: Name one time when it's important to wash your hands. Why is it important to wash your hands at that time?
Solution: It is important to wash your hands before eating. This is important because our hands might have touched dirty things, and germs could be on them. Washing our hands removes the germs so we don't eat them and get sick.
Question 2: Name one healthy food and explain why it's good for our body.
Solution: An apple is a healthy food. It's good for our body because it has vitamins that help us grow and stay healthy. It also gives us energy to play and learn.
Question 3: What is one fun activity you can do to stay healthy?
Solution: Playing soccer is a fun activity to stay healthy. It helps us run around and get exercise, which makes our hearts and muscles strong.
Question 4: Why is it important to brush your teeth?
Solution: It is important to brush your teeth because it removes food and plaque (a sticky film) that can cause cavities (holes in our teeth). Brushing also keeps our gums healthy. Independent Practice (Questions Only) List three healthy habits you can practice every day. What happens if you don't wash your hands before eating? Name two different fruits and two different vegetables. Why is it important to limit sugary drinks and snacks? Describe one way you can be physically active at home. Write one sentence explaining why healthy habits are important for young people in South Africa.
True or False: It's okay to only wash your hands with water, without soap. Explain your answer. Name one food rich in protein.
