Overview This week, we dive into the exciting world of Data Handling, while also revising key concepts learned earlier in the term. Data handling is a fundamental mathematical skill that helps us make sense of the world around us. For a Grade 1 learner in South Africa, this is not an abstract concept; it's something they do every day! When they help sort the washing (whites in one pile, colours in another), choose their favourite flavour of NikNaks with friends, or notice how many minibus taxis they see on the way to school versus cars, they are handling data. This lesson aims to formalise these intuitive skills.
What is Data Handling? Data is a collection of information, like facts or numbers. Handling data means we are being 'information detectives'.
We do four main things: Ask a Question: We start with something we want to find out.
Collect Data: We gather the answers or information.
Sort & Represent Data: We organise the information and show it in a way that's easy to understand.
Talk About Data: We look at our organised information and explain what we found.
Key Concept 1: Sorting (Classification) Sorting means putting things that are alike into groups. The 'rule' we use to sort is called an attribute. For Grade 1, we focus on one attribute at a time.
Attribute: A quality or feature of something.
Examples: colour, size, shape.
