Lesson summary

Overview This week, we dive into the exciting world of Data Handling! Data is simply information. Every day, we are surrounded by information, and learning how to handle it helps us make sense of our world. In South Africa, we see data everywhere: on the sports field when we look at the score for a Bafana Bafana soccer match, at the spaza shop when we see which cool drinks are the most popular, or even in our own classroom when we find out how many learners speak isiZulu, Sesotho, or Afrikaans at home. Data handling is a life skill.

Lesson notes

What is Data Handling? Data handling is a 4-step process for understanding information. Think of it like being a detective!

Step 1: Collect Data: The detective asks questions to get clues. We ask questions to get information.

For example: "What is your favourite animal from the Kruger National Park?" Step 2: Organise Data: The detective puts all the clues together in groups. We sort our information. For example, we put all the answers for 'Lion' together, all the answers for 'Elephant' together, etc.

Step 3: Represent Data: The detective makes a board with pictures to show the clues. We draw a picture graph, called a pictograph, to show our information.

Step 4: Analyse Data: The detective looks at the board to solve the mystery. We look at our pictograph to answer questions about our information. Creating a Pictograph A pictograph uses pictures to show data. Each picture stands for one item. Let's make one together!
