This week, we're revisiting important things we learned in Life Skills, specifically focusing on the topics we covered during Week

8. These topics are essential for your well-being, for understanding how to interact with others, and for becoming responsible young citizens of South Africa. We will be revising Personal Hygiene (keeping ourselves clean and healthy), Feelings and Emotions (understanding how we feel and how others feel), and Safety Rules at Home and at School (protecting ourselves from danger).

Personal Hygiene: Handwashing Handwashing is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy! Germs are tiny little bugs that can make you sick. They can be on your hands after you touch things like door handles, toys, or even your nose. Washing your hands gets rid of these germs and stops them from spreading to other people or into your body. Why is handwashing important? It prevents the spread of diseases like colds, flu, and tummy bugs. When should you wash your hands? Before eating food. After using the toilet. After playing outside. After touching animals. When your hands look dirty. After coughing or sneezing. How to wash your hands properly (Step-by-step): Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold). Apply soap. Rub your hands together to make a lather. Make sure to scrub all surfaces of your hands – the palms, the backs, between your fingers, and under your nails. Continue rubbing for at least 20 seconds. A good way to time this is to sing "Happy Birthday" twice! Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. b) Feelings and Emotions Feelings and emotions are how we react to things that happen around us. Everyone experiences different emotions, and it's important to understand what they are and how to manage them.

Examples of Emotions: Happy, Sad, Angry, Scared, Excited, Bored.

Happy: Feeling joyful, content, and pleased.

Example: Getting a new toy, playing with friends.

Sad: Feeling unhappy, disappointed, or down.

Example: Losing a toy, someone being mean to you.

Angry: Feeling mad, frustrated, or irritated.

Example: Someone taking your things without asking, not being able to do something.

Scared: Feeling afraid or worried.

Example: Seeing a big dog, hearing a loud noise.

Excited: Feeling eager, thrilled, or enthusiastic.

Example: Going on a trip, having a party.

Bored: Feeling uninterested or restless.

Example: Not having anything to do, doing the same thing for too long.

Why understanding emotions is important: It helps us to understand ourselves and others. It allows us to communicate how we are feeling. It allows us to manage our feelings in healthy ways (like talking to a trusted adult when we are sad or angry). c) Safety Rules at Home and School Safety rules are important to keep us safe from harm. We need to know the rules at home and at school.

Safety Rules at Home: Don't play with fire: Matches, lighters, and candles can cause serious burns. Always ask an adult to light them.

Don't touch electrical outlets: Electricity can shock you. Don't touch medicines or cleaning products: These can be poisonous.

Always tell a grown-up if you get hurt: It is important to get help right away.

Be careful in the kitchen: Stoves and ovens can get very hot.

Safety Rules at School: Walk, don't run, in the hallways: You might bump into someone and get hurt.

Follow the teacher's instructions: The teacher knows what is safe.

Don't play near dangerous areas: Stay away from the road, the construction site, or deep water. Tell a teacher if you see someone getting hurt: It is important to help.

Be careful on the playground equipment: Make sure you know how to use it safely.

What to do if someone gets hurt: First, stay calm. Then, tell a teacher or a grown-up right away. If you know basic first aid (like how to clean a small cut), you can help the person until the adult arrives. Never try to move someone who is seriously injured. Guided Practice (With Solutions)

Question 1: Sipho is about to eat his sandwich at school. Should he wash his hands first? Why or why not?

Solution: Yes, Sipho should wash his hands before eating his sandwich. This is because his hands might have germs on them from touching things like his desk, toys, or other surfaces. Washing his hands will remove the germs and prevent him from getting sick.

Question 2: Nomusa is feeling angry because another child took her crayons without asking. What are two things she can do to deal with her anger in a healthy way?

Solution: Nomusa can: Tell the child that she is angry because he took her crayons without asking and ask him to return them. This is communicating her feelings. Talk to her teacher about how she is feeling. The teacher can help her solve the problem and manage her anger.

Question 3: You see smoke coming from the kitchen at home. What should you do?

Solution: Tell a grown-up immediately. If there are no adults nearby, leave the house immediately and go to a safe place (like a neighbour's house) and call for help. Never try to put out the fire yourself.

Question 4: List the six steps of proper handwashing.

Solution: Wet hands with clean, running water. Apply soap. Rub hands together to create a lather for at least 20 seconds, cleaning all surfaces. Rinse hands well under clean, running water.
