This week is dedicated to revising all the key concepts covered in Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) up to this point in Grade

0. Effective revision is crucial for exam preparation and building a strong foundation for future EGD studies. EGD skills are essential for many careers in South Africa, from architecture and engineering to manufacturing and design, contributing to infrastructure development, technological innovation, and economic growth. Successfully mastering EGD will enable you to read, interpret, and create technical drawings, which are fundamental to effective communication in these fields.

Lesson notes

This section reviews the key concepts we've covered so far. 2.1 Orthographic Projection: Orthographic projection is a method of representing a 3D object in 2D by projecting its features onto different planes (usually front, top, and right side views).

There are two main methods: First-Angle Projection: The object is imagined to be in front of the projection planes. This means the front view is above the top view, and the right-side view is to the left of the front view. This is NOT the commonly used standard in South Africa and many other countries.

Third-Angle Projection: The object is imagined to be behind the projection planes. This means the front view is below the top view, and the right-side view is to the right of the front view. This is the STANDARD method used in South Africa and many international contexts.

Why it's important: Orthographic projection allows engineers and designers to communicate the exact shape and dimensions of an object without ambiguity. Imagine trying to build a bridge based on a vague, perspective drawing – it would be impossible!
